New tanks

Andrew and my dad have installed 3 new tanks in our front yard, so we can water our new edible front garden and driveway.  The tank in the second photo has an identical one behind it, and they are connected, so they will have equal amounts of water in them.  We've gone from one big tank with 4,500L capacity, to 4 tanks with a total of 11,700L capacity.  After all the rain we had over the last 2 weeks, including nearly one month's worth on Friday, the tank on it's own is full, and the other 2 are well on the way to being full.  Water security...check.

Harvest

 Snack sized carrots- so yummy!
Spring onions grown from seed, and fresh eggs.  The beginnings of fried rice for dinner.  The carrots are the first of the edible front garden harvest, we're just thinning them out really at the moment.  They were planted in early February.  The spring onions are growing in our old baby bath, and are a little short at the moment, but I'm sure they'll be good.

Would you like to tell our world leaders to stop subsidising fossil fuel?

The Earth Summit will be held in Rio in a few weeks.  If you'd like to tell our world leaders to subsidise renewable energy rather than fossil fuels, you can sign this petition.

How very eggciting!

We had our first blue egg today!  The other egg in the photo we think is a "rooster egg", as we had 4 eggs on Thursday, all brown, but one was a funny shape.  So we think the "rooster" laid it, and he is a she, whom we have named Frankie.  We had a few funny shaped ones from our original girls when they started to lay, and this one is not blue, so it's the only logical explanation.  Can't wait for some more blue eggs, to see if some will be bigger.  (Little) Louisa is a fair bit smaller than (Big) Betty, so I'm wondering if this egg is from Louisa.  It's only 46 grams.

New Araucanas

We welcomed 3 Araucana chickens to the flock this weekend.
One of them is possibly a rooster (it will have to go if it is!), But I'm thinking it might be an "easter egger", a chicken that is a cross breed, but has the blue egg gene.  It is about 9 months old and hasn't laid an egg yet, but hasn't crowed, and doesn't have a proper comb.  It looks different to the 2 hens, they are about a year old.  They've just been through their first moult, so we have to wait for them to start laying eggs again, which may be a while if they need 16 hours of daylight.  We've had to dunk their legs in oil, as they came with scaly leg mite.  One of them needs her nails trimmed too, might need some clippers.
The hen's names are Betty and Louisa, the 3rd one is known as the rooster for now.

Here's a selection of my fresh items for the upcoming Moriac Maker's and Grower's Market, to be held this Sunday at Newling Reserve, Moriac, from 9am-2pm.  It will be a great day, and just in time for a mother's day treat.
